Introduction:

The work included here is the culmination of several years of research in Florence. This research resulted in three exhibitions. The first exhibition was at the Museo di Pinocchio, Fondazione Nazionale Carlo Collodi in January 2003 and was based on the image of Pinocchio and Etruscan Sculputure. In May 2003, an exebition of painting was held at the National Sculpture Museum in Florence, the Bargello. This exhibition was the very first time that a modern painter exhibited work side by side the sculptures of Michelangelo, Donatello, Amannanti wich was their insperation. Also in May 2003 etching based of these sculptures were exhibited at the Modern Art Gallery Palazzo Pitti in Florence.

'It was in 1998 when I first set foot in the Bargello museum. I was immediately struck by the sensation of being present in a place of abundant life. Seated in the cloister I already felt I belonged there. Every day I would go to draw the statues. This obsessive research into the stroke and touch gave birth to the possibility of my penetrating their intimate air, and through their deconstruction was captured a contemporary interpretation. The starting point of my journey within the museum was my encounter with the lion. My identifying with him made him become the lion man who brought me to see the continuous flow of humanity in this statue.

Thus the man and the lantern represent the question of the individual, and his response to life. Bacchus becomes the transparency of intoxication, and the myth of Leda and the Swan symbolizes the difficulties of love. The technique I use consists of two materials, oil and ink. These do not merge in the work, but exist side by side on the canvas. The etchings are always made from observation using the lost wax technique.'   Gad Apotecker
